My name is Alistair Lane. I’m a design leader based in Ottawa, Canada. I currently work on the Dashboard team at Stripe, and prior to that I spent almost 10 years at Shopify building products, marketing campaigns and leading UX teams.

Shopify's Creative Direction team is made up of design technologists, motion designers, product designers, and illustrators.

In 2017, we shipped the first version of Shopify’s design system, Polaris. Following that, I led the team through a major refresh of our design language which shipped in 2020.

I joined the Online Store team to help evolve the theme design system and the way we use it to enable the team to produce a wider variety of designs, and give our merchants more tools to build their stores.

This included shipping two new themes, Colorblock and Origin to the theme store built on this system.

Team

The Garage was a purpose-built area in Shopify for rapid, experimental projects and I led the UX team.

The most noteable project we shipped was Frenzy which was one of Shopify’s first consumer products. It allowed merchants to sell their most hyped products to their biggest fans through limited time flash sales.
